With summer upon us, what can be better than warm sunny days filled with icy cold smoothies, maxi dresses, and endless pool parties? However, summer can also bring a few challenges to our skin and hair. Not only will the summer heat damage our locks, but our hair will become dry and even give us oily scalps. And on top of that, did you know that too much heat can also turn our hair green with excessive chlorine. But, there is good news; with the following simple tips, you can keep your hair protected and healthy all summer long.

Tip #1: Skip the Heat

Hair is already exposed to a high amount of heat during the summer, allowing it to dry quickly. Thus, give the blow dryer a break and dry your hair naturally if you can. Avoid hot styles like flat irons and curling irons as they can lead to further damage. Not to mention, styling your hair with heat will only make frizz stand out even more.

Tip #2: Choose Loose Styles

No matter how many heat-protectant products you have, avoid heat styling as much as possible. Excessive heat can lead to dry split-ends, especially if you are prone to hair loss. Instead, opt for a low ponytail or a messy braid to keep your hair under control and minimize sun exposure.

Tip #3: Wash Less

While there is no one-size-fits-all theory, frequently washing will lead to dry, brittle hair. If you normally wash your hair twice a week, making it three times a week can help prevent oily build-up. Use a shampoo that is mild enough to not strip the necessary oils. Furthermore, make sure to give your hair enough time to completely dry.

Tip #4: Boost Heat Protection

While we can’t control the weather, there are ways to stay protected if you’re going to spend the day under the sun. Starting with shampoo, apply a deep conditioner that contains SPF protection. This will keep your locks protected before you even step out of the shower. During extremely hot weather, cover your head with a hat. This will reduce damage caused by harsh heat and wind, especially if your hair is prone to tangles.

Tip #5: Tame Frizz

Do you spend over 20 minutes styling your hair to a tee and end up with frizzy strands the moment you step outside? Conquering frizzy hair is definitely a challenge, especially during the summer months. However, with the right tools, you can achieve a sleek stylish look that’s frizz-free.

Create a natural taming spray with equal parts of water and argan oil. This mixture will moisturize your hair while controlling it against the humidity.

Tip #6: Drink Plenty of Water

Drink more water! Not only is it vital to your body and mind, but it will also do wonders for your hair. Water hydrates the body from within, including our hair and scalp. In addition to drinking at least 2 liters of water per day, make sure to eat hydrating foods such as watermelon and cucumbers to stay cool and boost hair growth.

Above all, be gentle with your hair. Whether you plan on heading to the beach or the local pool, make sure to wash off the chlorine and harsh salt water and counteract the dryness with coconut oil.
