Having beautiful, clear and glowing skin is a top priority for just about everyone. The appearance of your skin is one of the first things that people notice about you, so it’s no wonder that the average consumer spends so much on skincare each year.
However, many popular skin care products are incredibly expensive, and to get regular monthly facials is an enormous expense as well. Luckily, there are many inexpensive ways to effectively treat skin conditions at home using inexpensive household ingredients. These methods have been proven time and time again to provide incredible results at a fraction of the cost of many coveted beauty products.
Below we have listed six easy, inexpensive and effective DIY skincare solutions that have been proven to treat acne-prone skin. Conveniently, most of the ingredients used already exist in almost every household.
1. Exfoliating Sugar Scrub
Proper exfoliation is a crucial step to any skincare routine. Face scrubs clean the skin beneath the surface and get deep into the pores to dislodge dirt and impurities which can eventually lead to breakouts.
However, many effective face scrubs on the market are very expensive. Luckily, making a homemade face scrub that cleans your face deeply and safely is very easy to make at home for a fraction of the cost.
Simply combine equal parts coconut oil that has been melted and raw sugar. This will create a consistency that is very easy to spread on your face. The raw sugar will get deep into your pores to remove blackheads and dirt while the moisturizing properties of coconut oil will give your complexion a radiant glow. The added bonus is that this face scrub smells amazing!
2. Honey and Cinnamon Mask
This combination combats acne and blemishes in no time. Honey has been used for centuries as an anti-inflammatory and antibacterial ingredient. Cinnamon is also antibacterial and contains antioxidants that stimulate new cell growth, rejuvenating dull skin virtually overnight.
To make this mask, combine 1/4 cup of raw, unfiltered honey with 2 tbsp of cinnamon. Spread this on your face and leave it on for 20 minutes before rinsing it off with cool water. After one use, your skin will feel incredibly soft and any irritation caused by troubled skin will have been reduced.
3. Egyptian Geranium Face Oil
Believe it or not, your breakouts may be the result of your skin being too dry. Skin that is severely dry will create an excess of oil to compensate, leading to clogged pores and pimples. By preparing this hydrating face oil, you will be giving your skin the moisture it needs. The Egyptian geranium essential oil works as a gentle antibacterial ingredient that will kill the bacteria which can cause breakouts.
Mix 4 tbsp of sweet almond oil with 4 tbsp of vegetable glycerin. Add 10 drops of Egyptian geranium face oil and whisk together. Using a small funnel, pour this into a dropper bottle and apply a couple drops to your skin each day. Massage this oil well into your face and your skin will be perfectly soft and smooth.
4. Baking Soda and Lemon Microdermabrasion Scrub
If you want to kill acne fast, combine baking soda and lemon juice to create a serious zit buster. The chemicals in baking soda balance the pH levels of your skin, killing bacteria that can lead to pimples. The lemon juice acts as an astringent thanks to citric acid which zaps pimples and blemishes.
Pour 4 tbsp of baking soda into a bowl and add a little lemon juice at a time until it forms a smooth paste. Spread this paste on your face, gently massaging it into your skin. The baking soda is fine enough that it can get deep into your pores, dislodging dirt and impurities trapped beneath the skin’s surface. Rinse off with lukewarm water.
5. Papaya and Avocado Mask
Papayas and avocados are two delicious foods to eat, and they also do wonders for your skin. Papaya contains a unique enzyme which breaks down dead skin cells which get trapped in your pores. It also reduces inflammation on contact. Avocado has natural fatty acids which deeply moisturize dry, damaged skin.
In a blender or a food processor, combine one skinned papaya and one skinned avocado. Spread this mixture evenly on your face and leave it on for 20 minutes before rinsing it off with lukewarm water. Your skin will be glowing in no time.
6. Steam Treatment
Facial steaming is an important step of any facial. By exposing your face to steam, you are opening up your pores so that dirt and impurities may be removed more easily.
Simply boil a pot of water and drape a towel over the back of your head. Lean over the pot for ten minutes at a safe distance so that your skin is not scalded. After ten minutes, pat your face dry.
With these six DIY skin care solutions, you will be able to treat your skin to a spa day using items that are inexpensive yet highly effective.
