90% of consumers who use cosmetics and fragrances say that they prefer products containing ingredients which are naturally-derived as they are better for them. Thankfully, some of the most natural ingredients on the market are found in plant oils and essential oils. Both of which are easy to source and inexpensive to buy. Not only are these oils natural, but they’re suitable for all skin types and boast some amazing skin care benefits.

Understanding plant oils & essential oils

As you would expect, plant oil stems from plants. These oils are usually extracted from a plant’s seeds and are a type of fat. You’re probably already using a number of these oils, such as coconut oil, olive oil, and flaxseed oil for cooking purposes as they provide great health benefits. However, they are also great for the skin.

Similarly, essential oils are extracted from plants. But they are distilled and subsequently mixed with a carrier oil so that can be used for things such as aromatherapy or for skin care purposes. Many of these oils contain antibacterial properties, reduce inflammation, heal, hydrate, and nourish the skin, and can even provide SPF protection from the sun. Therefore, when they are used regularly, healthier skin is assured. But, which plant and essential oils should you be prioritizing?

Argan oil

Argan oil’s make up of vitamin E, omega fatty acids, sterolins, and linoleic acids make it appropriate for use by individuals with all skin types. It’s an effective moisturizer as sterolins work to retain moisture within the epidermis. It’s also a good eye makeup remover and it doesn’t sting the eyes. But, one of its biggest benefits is its power to stop acne breakouts as the vitamin E within it is anti-inflammatory and works to restore the skin’s sebum levels.

Red raspberry seed oil

You undoubtedly know how important it is to protect your skin from the sun. But, you probably didn’t know that red raspberry seed oil can form part of your sun protection, along with an effective sunscreen. Research suggests that it contains between 28 and 50 SPF protection against UVB rays and SPF 8 against damaging UVA rays. Additionally, the fatty acids and antioxidants found in raspberry seed oil can heal common skin complaints, including eczema and psoriasis.

Frankincense oil

Frankincense has been used for centuries and is considered so special that it was gifted to the baby Jesus. Frankincense is recognized as an astringent, meaning it works to shrink the tissue within the body. Astringents also keep the size of your pores to a minimum. This is essential in preventing clogged pores which can lead to breakouts. Frankincense is also capable of reducing the appearance of scars, so it’s an effective remedy for the 20% of people who have such severe acne that it causes scarring.

Sandalwood oil

As an essential oil sandalwood has the potential to completely overhaul the condition of your skin. One of its greatest benefits is being able to relieve itchy skin, something which is a common symptom in eczema patients, and when a new tattoo is healing. Sandalwood oil also promises to fight the signs of aging as the sesquiterpene within it encourages the growth and repair of skin cells. On top of these benefits, sandalwood oil is an astringent, antiseptic, emollient, and an anti-inflammatory.

Almond oil

Almond oil is another oil which is rich in vitamin E. It’s packed full of other feel-good skin nutrients too, including fatty acids, zinc, and vitamins A and B. All of these work together to deeply nourish the skin, leaving it smooth and moisturized. And, if dark circles under your eyes are a cause for concern, you’ll be pleased to know that rubbing almond oil into the area will lighten the color of the skin and even tackle under eye wrinkles.

Pomegranate seed oil

Pomegranate seed oil consists of a number of anti-aging ingredients. Punicic acid is known to increase the production of collagen, which is a product that keeps the skin looking young and healthy. Meanwhile, omege 9 acids which are also found in pomegranate seed oil are renowned for preventing wrinkles and fine lines from appearing. And, the vitamin E in it is an antioxidant which fights off the visible signs of aging.

Plant oils and essential oils consist of multiple components which can help the skin look and feel healthier, younger and brighter. When used regularly, these oils can combat a number of skin conditions and provide you with a more natural and cheaper effective skin care regimen.
