She’s been voted People’s Most Beautiful Woman a record five times and has skin that is famously luminous. Julia Roberts, 51, describes beauty as “a cheerfulness” and says she follows a low maintenance regime, attributing her glowing skin to good genetics. But she does have a few beauty secrets up her sleeve to share.

Don’t Sleep With Makeup On

Every woman has fallen to sleep with makeup on a some point, perhaps after a night out or you just had a busy day, but removing your makeup every evening before bed is a skincare rule that Julia Roberts swears by. Not removing your makeup can cause it to mix with dirt and oil on your skin which can lead to pores clogging and skin breaking out. It can also make applying night time beauty products pointless as they won’t be able to get absorbed by the skin as easily if they have a layer of makeup to get through first. Julia Roberts is known to use Bi-Facial eye makeup remover by Lancôme, of which she is an ambassador for.

Moisturizer Is Your Friend

Being a Hollywood star involves lots of air travel, which can be drying on the skin. Julia Roberts way around this is to, self admittedly, go a little over the top with the hydrating skin care products. Amongst other A-listers, such as Rihanna and Victoria Beckham, Roberts uses Weleda’s Skin Food moisturizer, which sells for a very modest $12, saying “I put it on my hands after I wash the dishes and wind up putting it on my elbows and feet. Before you know it, I’ve squeezed this poor little green tube into a twist”.

Hands are often an overlooked area and can be easily forgotten in your skincare regime, yet they can be one of the biggest tell-tale signs to your age due to how much use and exposure they get through daily tasks.

SPF In All Weathers

SPF should really be a part of your daily skincare regime, particularly if you’re spending a lot of time outdoors. Even on cloudy days, the sun’s harmful rays can get through and gradually damage skin over the years. A lot of foundations and moisturizers contain a low level of SPF, which can help, but it’s a good idea to start with a layer of it before applying makeup, as well as covering the rest of any skin that will be exposed. She told People magazine that her go to is sunscreen by Shade, saying “It keeps working no matter how sweaty or how much time we spend in the water! It’s magical.”.

You Are What You Eat

A good diet can be thanked for many things, including the health and appearance of your skin. Julia Roberts follows a mainly gluten-free and organic diet, while being conscious of what she’s eating. She told The Independent that she has tried following carb-free diets, but simply can’t give up bread. The star reportedly also uses extra-virgin olive oil for her skin, believing it rejuvenates it. She massages a few drops with warm water into her skin and thanks it for her glowing complexion.

If you want to age gracefully, you should really take a leaf out of Julia Roberts’ book. She easily looks ten years younger and, despite a fairly simple skincare regime, has glowing skin that is the envy of thousands of women.
