When it comes to skincare, people want the most effective ingredients that yield immediate or noticeable results. This is especially true when it comes to skin lightening, and although Western beauty standards lean towards tanned skin, in Asia and certain parts of Africa, it’s all about having a fairer complexion. In 2017, the worldwide skin lightening market was worth $4.8 billion and is expected to grow to $8.9 billion by 2027, proving that many individuals all over the world are turning to skin lightening or bleaching creams to get a lighter skin tone. However, as many lightening creams contain potentially harmful ingredients such as mercury and hydroquinone, some people who want to have a porcelain-like glow are now turning to natural remedies to lighten their skin, such as lemon juice.

Lemon juice has long been touted as a natural way to achieve lighter and brighter skin, but is it safe to use on a regular basis? Moreover, can it cause skin problems in the long run? Here’s what you to need to know about using lemon juice to achieve fairer skin.

How Lemon Juice’s High Acidity Can Hurt Your Skin

Though DIY skincare is all the rage nowadays, it’s crucial to know that applying pure lemon juice to your skin may do more harm than good. First of all, lemon juice is highly acidic at about 2 pH, and anything that is too acidic—be it an organic or commercially-available skincare or beauty product—can have a negative impact on the skin.

On “Ask A Scientist,” expert Jim Swenson said that acids with pH levels of 3 and below can be very irritating to the skin.

“Lemon juice has a pH of roughly 2.3,” said Swenson. “You could wet a spot on your arm with that, let it dry, and in a little while, it will itch.”

Once it’s applied topically, lemon juice can alter the natural pH level of your skin’s acid mantle, resulting in hyperpigmentation and skin irritation.

Does Lemon Juice Work To Whiten Skin?

If you’re wondering if lemon juice really works to lighten skin, the answer is yes, it does, but it takes time to achieve noticeable results. Citrus fruits such as lemons are packed with Vitamin C or ascorbic acid, which can naturally exfoliate skin, resulting in a fresher and lighter-looking complexion. However, it can take several months of repeated use to notice a marked change in skin pigmentation, and during this time, it’s possible to experience side effects that range from minor skin rashes to more serious skin conditions.

It Can Cause Chemical Burns

Lemon juice might be all-natural, but being natural doesn’t mean that it won’t cause you any harm. This citrus juice can actually make your skin more sensitive to sunlight, and it can cause blistering and irritation. If you happen to have acne, it may even worsen your skin condition. Moreover, its acidic properties can cause chemical burns—you’ll know that you have a lemon juice-induced burn if your skin is reddened and feels painful even without applying pressure to it.

Safer And More Effective Ways To Lighten And Brighten Your Skin

If you want to have lighter or brighter skin, there are other things that you can do that won’t harm your health or your complexion. Soaps, creams, or lotions that contain glutathione may be better for your skin as our bodies naturally produce this antioxidant. Increasing your glutathione levels can also help to get glowing and even-toned skin. You can do this by increasing your Vitamin C intake, or adding selenium-rich foods to your diet, such as beef, cottage cheese, and brown rice.

If you want faster results, you can consult your dermatologist for professional whitening treatments—discuss several options to know what’s right for you. Having beautiful, fairer, and glowing skin can also be achieved with the help of a licensed aesthetician, but make sure that you go to one who specializes in skin lightening to get the best results.

Simple Hacks To Winterize Your Skincare Routine https://yourskinonline.com/simple-hacks-to-winterize-your-skincare-routine/ https://yourskinonline.com/simple-hacks-to-winterize-your-skincare-routine/#respond Thu, 25 Oct 2018 20:51:43 +0000 https://yourskinonline.com/?p=2383

Winter is just around the corner, and once the temperature drops, most people start to experience cold weather skin conditions such as severe dryness and itching. Skin dryness becomes much more common as you age, with at least 75% of people over the age of 64 having dry skin. Apart from loss of moisture and flaking, more serious skin problems such as rosacea and cold hives also come with unique challenges that most people in the US have to contend with during the winter season. The good news is that most of these winter-related skin problems can be avoided by following a skincare routine tailored to the weather. With a bit of time, diligence, and the right products, you can have clear, hydrated, and healthy skin, even during the bitter cold months. Here are some simple hacks to winterize your skincare routine.

Switch To Richer Moisturizers And Lotions

A lightweight or gel moisturizer may feel nice and comfy on your skin during the hot summer months. But once it starts getting chilly, your skin may benefit from a richer formula. Creams made especially for cold weather can help your skin retain its moisture levels. Also, serums, essences, and masks formulated for very dry skin can help to avoid itching and flaking, especially if you have combination or dry skin. However, if you have oily skin, you may find that your complexion tends to be more balanced during winter. If you have this skin type, it may be best to just continue using your regular products and moisturize as needed.

Protect Your Pout With The Right Lip Balm

Your lips are more prone to peeling, chapping, and cracking during the winter season. This is why having a lip balm in your pocket or bag at all times is essential when it’s cold and snowing outside. The right formula will protect your lips and keep it soft and smooth, so don’t go for a tube of lip balm with a waxy or dry feel. Something that has more “slip” and is formulated with nourishing oils such as vitamin E, jojoba, coconut, or avocado will feel soothing on your lips. Shea butter is another ingredient that can improve dry and chapped lips, so look for these ingredients the next time you go shopping for lip balm.

If you wear lip color, consider switching from a matte formula to a satin or glossy one. Most matte lipsticks, lip tints, or lip paints are notorious for sapping the moisture out of lips. Mattes can also make flakes and peeling more noticeable. However, if you absolutely love your matte lipstick, you can prevent dryness by coating your lips with some lip balm first. Let it absorb for a few minutes before putting on your lip color.

Don’t Hesitate To Exfoliate

It may seem counterintuitive to exfoliate in wintertime, but doing so can actually help moisturizers and lotions to work better. By exfoliating, you’re removing the dead cells on top of your skin, so any product that you apply will be absorbed better. For a natural body scrub, you can make your own using ingredients that you may already have in your pantry. A DIY scrub made of granulated sugar or coffee grounds and coconut oil, or a blend of finely ground oatmeal, sugar, and olive oil can gently slough off dead skin cells while hydrating your skin at the same time. In the shower, work the scrub in an upwards-circular motion for best results. Rinse off, pat your skin dry, and follow with your favorite body lotion.

Keeping skin soft, healthy, and hydrated during the winter is just a matter of tweaking your current skincare and beauty routine to fit the season. Exfoliate and moisturize well to give your skin a radiant glow, and use products that are suited for your skin type for the best results. If severe dryness persists, or if you experience other skin conditions during the winter, consult a dermatologist.

Saving The Tattoo Ole: A Closer Look At The Fight To Keep The World’s Oldest Tattoo Shop Open https://yourskinonline.com/saving-the-tattoo-ole-a-closer-look-at-the-fight-to-keep-the-worlds-oldest-tattoo-shop-open/ https://yourskinonline.com/saving-the-tattoo-ole-a-closer-look-at-the-fight-to-keep-the-worlds-oldest-tattoo-shop-open/#respond Mon, 22 Oct 2018 23:15:02 +0000 https://yourskinonline.com/?p=2374

Tattoo artists come and go, and once in a while, someone comes along that makes the world sit up and take notice of their artistry. But rarely can one find a tattoo shop that has withstood the test of time, which is why Tattoo Ole, the oldest tattoo parlor in the world, holds a special place in the hearts of ink enthusiasts. The shop located in Nyhavn, Copenhagen has been around for 134 years, and every year, tattoo aficionados from all over the world make the pilgrimage to this historic landmark. But despite its iconic status, the Tattoo Ole may cease its operations as the shop is in danger of being closed down. The good news is that thousands of tattoo fans are gearing up as they find ways to keep the Tattoo Ole open in a bid to preserve the colorful history and legacy of this shop.

From Sailors To Royalty–The Tattoo Ole’s History Of Diverse Clients

The Tattoo Ole has been open since 1884 and back in the day, its main clients included mostly sailors and prostitutes. For almost a century, it was the only place where a person could get inked in Scandinavia, and over the years, the shop was owned by different tattoo artists. By the 50’s and 60’s, the shop was run by artist Bimbo, and one of his customers was King Frederik IX, who was the King of Denmark from 1947 to 1972. Since then, Tattoo Ole has attracted celebrities, tattoo fans, and artists who are more than happy to get inked at this institution.

The shop is currently owned by Majbritt “Lille Ole” Petersen, who is the first female owner of the Tattoo Ole throughout its history. While Petersen’s ownership of the studio marks another important milestone for the shop, the artist is currently on an important mission as she fights to keep Tattoo Ole open.

Preserving The Tattoo Ole’s Legacy

Speaking with The Local, Petersen said that the owner of the building wherein the studio is located has declined to renew the studio’s lease. The artist added that the owner of the Nyhavn 17 building is planning to convert the studio into extra kitchen space for a restaurant that operates on another floor of the building.

Petersen is not giving up without a fight as she is contesting the owner’s decision to terminate the studio’s lease. Meanwhile, an online petition to keep the Tattoo Ole open has gotten over 10,000 signatures from tattoo enthusiasts all over the world. Thousands have expressed their outrage over the building owner’s plans, with one commenter saying on the petition site that the Tattoo Ole is irreplaceable and that its history should be respected.

“Restaurants can be found on every street corner in Copenhagen,” said commenter Denise Bennett. “The city’s history is hard to keep in this modern age.”

Keeping Tattoo Ole’s Tradition Alive

As of the moment, the Tattoo Ole remains open as the fate of this iconic studio has yet to be decided. Petersen is determined to keep the shop open as its history not only connects fans of body art, but all the tattoo artists who owned the studio before her.

“Everyone who has had this shop is not family related, but everyone has worked together,” said the artist. She also pointed out that people have come to the studio for generations as they find the place to be familiar and comforting.

“We’ve tattooed grandparents and then the parents and then the kids when they get old,” said Petersen.

Tattoo Ole’s rich history may be the key to save the shop from closing its doors for good. For now, Petersen and tattoo fans are hoping for the best as they continue the fight to save the oldest tattoo parlor in the world.

First Steps Towards An Acne Vaccine https://yourskinonline.com/first-steps-towards-an-acne-vaccine/ https://yourskinonline.com/first-steps-towards-an-acne-vaccine/#respond Fri, 21 Sep 2018 20:15:15 +0000 https://yourskinonline.com/?p=2194

More than 40 million adults have been diagnosed with acne in the United States alone. The good news is that scientists have been looking into steps to prevent the spread of acne through vaccines, and the starting point of that vaccine may be derived from something that already exists in all human beings. Though the treatment still has to undergo several clinical trials, the creation of such a vaccine can potentially eradicate acne for good, along with the mental side effects that many people experience as a result of this skin condition.

The Christie-Atkins-Munch-Petersen (CAMP) factor is a toxin secreted by Propionibacterium acne bacteria (P-acne), which specifically inflames areas under duress from acne. The first step towards an acne vaccine, scientists have suggested, is to inhibit these P-acne. Scientists tested introducing these toxins into mice and lab-grown human skin cells, which proved successful. After testing, they’ve found antibodies they believe act as a vaccine to these toxins.

One significant factor in identifying a vaccine is understanding under what circumstances this acne thrive. The researchers noted during their trials that P-acne exhibited anaerobic tendencies, or that in short, the skin was far more likely to become inflamed when deprived of oxygen such as when covered up, when chafing under clothing, or during extensive exercise. Any vaccine developed for P-acne would have to be effective under similar circumstances.

Targeting Acne Without Harming Good Bacteria

The sensitive nature of an acne vaccine is that acne bacteria are, in effect, a part of your immune system designed to fight against virulent diseases and problems with the skin. The problem is that these bacteria can overproduce or overreact to an outbreak of foreign substances. In the case of P-acne in particular, this leads to inflammation and acne spots on the skin, and the excessive response can damage your skin, making it more prone to future attacks.

The antibodies proposed for a future acne vaccine would target P-acne specifically, to reduce inflammation without affecting any other part of the immune system’s process. Of course, creating a vaccine to a part of the body’s natural defense system is dangerous, so the team behind the research has already voiced their interest in being very careful about their research. They want to create a vaccine that affects only the parts of the acne bacteria that are necessary.

The Cause Has Been Identified, But Testing Is Still Underway

It’s important to note that although the antibodies have shown some initial success in mice, that testing doesn’t always translate to human trials. In fact, by even the most optimistic estimates roughly one in five human trials go poorly after successful animal testing. Added to that, the initial tests merely induce inflammation the scientists felt was similar to an acne breakout, they did not give the mice acne.

That’s not to undermine the magnitude of recent findings. The testing measured P-acne levels in inflamed acne and inactive acne spots and consistently found incredibly high levels of P-acne in the inflamed areas. The researchers are certain that P-acne is the direct cause of large acne lesions and excessive outbreaks. Identifying the source with such a level of assurance means we no longer have to wonder why we have acne outbreaks, only how to prevent it (P-acne).

It is also important to note that because the intention is to create a vaccine, mice testing will be inefficient for any final cure. Vaccines are created through the proliferation of human cells that are resilient to the bacteria or disease. As such, while mice can be used to test the anti-inflammatory properties of potential vaccines, testing a vaccine on mice in the final stages wouldn’t show whether the vaccine was effective or not in human cells.

The Value Of A Vaccine

Though treatments exist for acne, they often rely on topical application, absorption through pores, or oral medication. These methods of introducing chemicals into the body can inflame acne-sensitive areas or may be blocked off since P-acne produces pore-covering chemicals. The introduction of a vaccine would allow the body to build up proper antibodies from the inside and circulate them to affected areas through natural blood flow instead.

Bacteria other than the intended acne bacteria are also exposed to current skin treatments, and so the homeostasis of your body can be affected in some ways. Good bacteria on your skin may die due to the acne treatments, and it’s possible that even the acne underneath may develop resistance to the chemicals used to treat your skin condition. A vaccine would evolve and adapt at a rate similar to the P-acne though, reducing the chance of cure-resistant strains appearing.

The possibility of an acne vaccine has risen exponentially with recent research into the subject. Identifying P-acne as the cause of acne flare-ups has given researchers a clear target for their research, and their goal has become how to inhibit P-acne specifically. A vaccine could reduce acne without creating resistant strains the way other medicines do. But until positive results in humans are seen, the chances of having an acne-free future is still unclear.

Research Shows Maple Leaf Extract Could Stop Wrinkles https://yourskinonline.com/research-shows-maple-leaf-extract-could-stop-wrinkles/ https://yourskinonline.com/research-shows-maple-leaf-extract-could-stop-wrinkles/#respond Tue, 18 Sep 2018 14:32:29 +0000 https://yourskinonline.com/?p=2182

Maple trees are commonly associated with the syrup created from their sap, but researchers are now suggesting that a different part of the tree might be even more useful. You can find the full extent of their findings from the meeting of the American Chemical Society on August 20, 2018. But in short, the findings suggest that extracts from the maple leaves could inhibit the elasticity of skin, which could induce tightening of the skin similar to Botox without any dangerous injections.

It may improve skin elasticity

The focus of the research was on elastase, a protein in the skin that breaks down the elastic part of the skin over time. As your skin becomes less elastic, it loses the ability to pull back into place, much like an old rubber band that loses its ability to snap back. Maple leaf extract stops elastase from weakening the elasticity of your skin so that it can better resist the pull of gravity, rubbing, and other outside forces that exert influence on your skin and slowly cause wrinkles.

The study focused on glucitol-core-containing gallotannins (GCGs), a particular compound in the leaves. GCGs are phenolic compounds containing multiple galloyl groups. Galloyl groups are shown to reduce the influence of elastase but are even more effective when combined. Maple leaf extract has an especially high concentration of different galloyl compounds, making it a powerful and natural source of these compounds that may prevent wrinkling.

It may treat skin in multiple ways

This wasn’t the only work the team had put into maple leaf extract and its influence on the skin, however. Used in different tests, they also surmised that it could reduce dark patches or discoloration in the skin. It also exhibited what they concluded was anti-inflammatory properties, meaning it could reduce swelling and redness in the skin. As a result of these two things, maple leaf extract could fight wrinkles and reduce freckles and skin damage at the same time.

It is safer than previous treatments

One of the key points of interest in this is that maple leaf extract can reduce the stretchiness of skin, and unlike its competition, it is a relatively safe and completely natural alternative. The closest challenger in the field of anti-aging in this manner is botox. Botox relies on injecting dangerous and possibly lethal bacteria just beneath the surface, however, while maple extract would be applied directly to the skin, likely as an oil or in a compress of some kind.

This makes maple leaf extract the front-runner in fighting wrinkles for eco-friendly or green-minded users. It offers them a conscientious alternative, while any skin enthusiasts will appreciate that it doesn’t have the glaring and inherent risks that botox can. Maple allergies do exist, though allergies to maple pollen, extract, and syrup is all different because they involve different parts of the tree. Still, they are uncommon and vastly safer than the current alternative.

Source of inspiration

The idea for maple leaf extract as an anti-aging chemical came from observations of its use by Native Americans, the team claims. According to Navindra P. Seeram, Ph.D., ” Native Americans used leaves from red maple trees in their traditional system of medicine, so why should we ignore the leaves?” They immediately noted that unlike modern U.S. culture, which only utilized the sap of red maple, Native Americans had a variety of medicinal uses for the tree.

Upon comparing its local use and their own research, Hang Ma, Ph.D. noted: “We wanted to see whether leaf extracts from red maple trees could block the activity of elastase.” As previously noted, they’d observed the extract’s usefulness removing dark patches and redness, so they felt it was the next logical step. Whether the team had an inkling of its uses in anti-aging before noticing its use in Native American medicine or not, of course, is up to speculation.

The treatment caters to a different market

Many modern beauty treatments and their botanical products come from China, India, and what the U.S. would consider exotic source nations. The interesting thing about red maple and most of the maple plants discussed in the research is that they all exist primarily in the United States. This could make them more available in western markets and may influence just how quickly maple extract is added to cosmetic products.

For the time being the researchers have already sought a patent for Maplifa, which is a particular combination of maple sap, and extract from fall and summer leaves. Though the exact ratio of ingredients necessary for the best results may not be finalized yet, they’ve insisted their patent exists so they can market the formula through Verdure Sciences, which will raise awareness of their findings and show the extract’s effectiveness as either a cosmetic or dietary supplement.

Preliminary testing shows that maple leaf extract may not only reduce wrinkling, it may also remove dark spots and reduce inflammation. These are all anti-aging effects and may help to improve your skin’s health and long-term beauty. Maple leaves have been used for medicinal purposes for centuries, but the extract is only entering the cosmetic market now and may serve as a vastly safer alternative to Botox treatments while providing a nearly identical effect.

Why Coconut Oil Should Be Part Of Your Skincare Routine https://yourskinonline.com/why-coconut-oil-should-be-part-of-your-skincare-routine/ https://yourskinonline.com/why-coconut-oil-should-be-part-of-your-skincare-routine/#comments Wed, 05 Sep 2018 20:02:22 +0000 https://yourskinonline.com/?p=2157

More people are choosing to go natural with their skincare routine as evidenced by the continuous growth of the organic beauty market. By 2024, the global market is projected to be worth $22 billion, which means that in the following years, more organic products will be crowding drugstore and specialty store shelves as the demand for natural beauty and skincare products increases While this is certainly good news, going completely green with your beauty routine can be quite costly as you’re paying for higher quality products that are healthier for you than conventional alternatives. Fortunately, there are other ways to incorporate natural products into your skincare routine, and this includes using coconut oil for your face and body.

Coconut oil has been hailed as a beauty secret by many celebrities such as Gwyneth Paltrow, who uses it as a moisturizer and as a natural tooth cleaner and whitener. Blake Lively uses it to keep her hair healthy, while “This Is Us” star Mandy Moore uses it as a body lotion right after a shower. If you have yet to try this natural wonder, here are all the reasons why coconut oil should be part of your skincare routine.

Coconut Oil Speeds Up Skin Healing

A dab of coconut oil on skin problems such as rashes or stretch marks can speed up healing and reduce inflammation. It can even be used on wounds as it has anti-microbial properties to prevent infection and it encourages the production of collagen to strengthen and repair damaged skin. In a study, it was found that the application of coconut oil can heal wounds in 10 days, making it an effective way to promote skin healing without resorting to chemicals or commercially available ointments.

If you have a wound, clean it first with soap and water, then gently pat dry with a soft, clean towel. Apply a bit of coconut oil to the affected area, then cover with a square of clean gauze. Do this at least once a day until the wound heals.

It Naturally Hydrates The Skin

Coconut oil is made up of saturated fats that can help to lock in moisture, resulting in softer and smoother skin. If excessive dryness is an issue, then coconut oil can help to hydrate your skin from head to toe. Scoop up a small amount and massage onto your skin after a shower or whenever your skin feels tight and itchy.

It Can Prevent And Improve Wrinkles And Fine Lines

Due to its moisturizing and collagen-building properties, coconut oil may also be used to prevent the signs of skin aging and improve wrinkles and fine lines. Collagen is what makes the skin firm and resilient and as we age, our skin loses collagen, making it prone to wrinkles and sagging. Instead of using firming creams or getting a facelift, try applying coconut oil to the face twice a day—after cleansing in the morning, and before bedtime. However, if you don’t like using it under makeup, then a bit of coconut oil massaged onto your face at night can help to keep wrinkles at bay.

Other Ways To Use Coconut Oil In Your Skincare Routine

Apart from applying coconut oil straight from the tub or bottle, there are other ways to incorporate this oil into your skincare routine. Mix it with equal parts brown sugar and you’ve got yourself a hydrating body scrub that will leave your skin clean and glowing. To relieve chapped lips, combine coconut oil with some mint oil for an all-natural and soothing lip balm. You can also use it to make a massage oil—just mix a few teaspoons of coconut oil with your favorite scented oil such as lavender or peppermint and use before bedtime for a good night’s sleep.

Try these tips to incorporate coconut oil into your beauty routine for smooth and soft skin. If you’re prone to acne, you may find that this oil may exacerbate your skin condition, so use it on dry patches only to keep your skin healthy. Only use organic coconut oil for the best results and always keep it in a cool, dry place to preserve its healing and moisturizing properties.

A Guide To Keeping Skin Healthy And Radiant This Fall https://yourskinonline.com/a-guide-to-keeping-skin-healthy-and-radiant-this-fall/ https://yourskinonline.com/a-guide-to-keeping-skin-healthy-and-radiant-this-fall/#respond Tue, 28 Aug 2018 22:23:01 +0000 https://yourskinonline.com/?p=2053

Having clear, healthy skin continues to be one of the top beauty goals in the country as Americans are projected to spend over $16 million on skincare products this year. In the hopes of keeping one’s skin hydrated and blemish-free, more people are starting to see the benefits of having a skincare routine tailored to their needs. However, changing weather can also affect the state of one’s complexion, which is why it is important to use products and certain skincare techniques that would work well for a specific season.

As the weather turns cooler in the following weeks, skincare aficionados know that tailoring their skincare routine to the season will result in a radiant glow even when the temperature drops. Here’s a guide to keeping your skin healthy and glowing this fall.

Rethink Your Cleanser

If your skin starts to feel tight, dry, and itchy every time the weather gets colder, then the first thing that you should do is to change some of the products that you use on a daily basis, such as your body soap and facial cleanser. Your regular soap may have worked well to keep you squeaky clean this summer, but for fall, it may be better to use a cleanser enriched with moisturizers or natural oils to keep your skin hydrated. For all-over cleansing, a creamy body wash is your best bet to keep your skin looking and feeling its best.

For your face, try a hydrating and balancing formula to keep dry patches away. Also, if you’ve never tried double cleansing before, now would be the right time to start as it can keep your face clean without stripping away your skin’s natural oils. To double cleanse, start by massaging a cleansing oil or balm onto your face to gently draw out makeup, SPF, and soot from your pores, then rinse with lukewarm water. Next, work a foam cleanser onto your face to get rid of sweat and dirt, then rinse.

Don’t Skip Moisturizer

When the weather turns crisp and cold, using a moisturizer—and being diligent about it—is key to prevent dryness. Keeping your skin moisturized also helps to keep itch and flakes away, and it can also reduce the look of fine lines and wrinkles. If you’re satisfied with your current moisturizer, there’s no reason why you should replace it. However, if you find yourself reaching for it several times a day, it may be better to switch to a richer formula to keep your skin looking great. Take a few minutes to massage the moisturizer onto your skin to make sure that it absorbs well.

Apart from using a moisturizer, there are other ways to hydrate your skin this fall. Try using a moisturizing foundation, cushion compact, or BB cream as your base—not only will it give your face a flawless look, but any of these can help to give your skin a dewy look throughout the day. Once you’re done applying your makeup, set it with a moisturizing mist. Korean beauty brands carry different face mists variants, and the best thing is that they don’t cost a lot. Use this instead of powder to refresh your makeup throughout the day and you’ll notice that your skin looks more hydrated and healthy than it ever was.

Ease Up On The Exfoliation

Exfoliating your skin during the hot summer months may have helped to keep blemishes at bay, but once the weather turns, it’s best to ease up on the scrubbing to keep your skin healthy. If you’re used to exfoliating three times a week, cut back and scrub up only once a week. You can also use an oil-based scrub to replenish your skin, or better yet, you can make your own using natural ingredients that you already have in your kitchen.

For a skin-friendly exfoliant to use this fall, combine a cup of fine sea salt with half a cup of olive oil and a few drops of rosemary oil. If you need extra hydration, try mixing a cup of sugar with sesame oil or coconut oil and a few drops of blue chamomile essential oil. Use the scrub once a week for soft and smooth skin.

Having great-looking skin all-year round is possible if you use the right products and tailor your skincare techniques to suit the weather. And as always, a sensible diet, getting enough rest and drinking eight glasses of water a day will ensure that your skin is at its best no matter what time of year. Follow these tips to have radiant, clear, and healthy skin this fall. If itching and dryness persist, consult a dermatologist for treatment or medication.

Face Tattoos: Why Post Malone And Young Rappers Are Getting Them https://yourskinonline.com/face-tattoos-why-post-malone-and-young-rappers-are-getting-them/ https://yourskinonline.com/face-tattoos-why-post-malone-and-young-rappers-are-getting-them/#respond Wed, 22 Aug 2018 19:49:03 +0000 https://yourskinonline.com/?p=2031

Rappers And Their Reasons For Their Face Tattoos

Back in July, Post Malone revealed the reason why he decided to get face tattoos. In an interview with Captial Xtra’s Tim Wood, the artist said that he did it because more than anything, he just wanted to annoy his mother.

“It’s not right,” said Malone. “I got a face for radio anyways, so why not?”

Meanwhile, Lil Xan told Billboard that he always knew that he would never get a 9-to-5 job, which is why at the age of 18, he decided to get a face tattoo of his mother’s name. While the trend seems de rigueur among SoundCloud rappers, it looks like the rest of Hollywood has yet to get onboard this fad.

The Repercussions Of This Inking Trend

Face tattoos have become the ink of choice among young rappers, so much so that this year’s MTV VMA’s host, Kevin Hart, couldn’t help but point out this fact at the show. On Aug. 20, the comedian roasted Lil Pump and Lil Xan, saying that they are “the reasons that your 12-year-old cousin wants a face tattoo.”

“Stop writing on your face, it’s stupid,” the comedian continued. “You’re not going to get a job if this [expletive] don’t work out, stop it.”

Hart may be on to something as Joel Jose Molina, a tattoo artist at Chicago Tattoo & Piercing Co., told The New York Times that he and his co-workers have a special moniker for face tattoos.

“We call them job stoppers,” said Molina to the news outlet. “Your possibilities are cut down. You’re going to be working at the Trader Joe’s putting groceries away or working that bar job.”

Just A Passing Fad, Or Is It Here To Stay?

No one predicted that tattoos would become part of the mainstream culture as everyone from celebrities to moms and even socialites are getting inked nowadays. However, are face tattoos about to become as commonplace as the infinity symbol on the wrist as seen on many Instagrammers?

Perhaps the reluctance of some tattoo artists to give clients this type of ink may affect the popularity of the face tattoo. Speaking with The Outline, tattoo artist Sara Antoinette said that she mostly gives this type of body art to longtime customers who already have tattoos on their bodies. She also added that she and her co-workers would turn away anyone who wants a face tattoo as their first ink.

British tattoo artist Kevin Paul echoed Antoinette’s sentiment, saying that as artists, they have a responsibility to educate their customers about making good choices when it comes to getting inked.

“Having face tattoos myself, I know how people look at you and judge you differently,” said Paul. “I personally wouldn’t have done it if I could go back again.”

How Watermelon Can Give You Glowing Skin https://yourskinonline.com/how-watermelon-can-give-you-glowing-skin/ https://yourskinonline.com/how-watermelon-can-give-you-glowing-skin/#respond Tue, 21 Aug 2018 23:06:14 +0000 https://yourskinonline.com/?p=2022

Every year, it seems like a new skincare routine or product gets Internet famous as they’re touted to give you the best skin you’ll ever have. For instance, 2017 was all about the glass skin skincare routine, while earlier this year it was all about having “cloudless” skin. Both routines call for numerous steps and products, and while these skincare regimens may have resulted in clear skin for many people, it can be time-consuming and costly in the long run. The good news is that there are easier—and cheaper—ways to get great skin, and one way to achieve a flawless complexion is to consume a vitamin-rich fruit, such as watermelon.

Watermelon, which is more than just a summer staple or a mainstay in cocktails, has surprising benefits that will keep your skin looking its best. Whether eaten as a snack or used topically, here’s how watermelon can give you smooth, glowing skin.

Hydrating And Skin-Strengthening Properties

Although watermelon is made up of mostly water, this fruit is packed with vitamins and antioxidants that can hydrate your skin. It contains Vitamins A and C, which can keep skin and hair moisturized, and it encourages the growth of collagen and elastin cells. This leads to having resilient skin, which can delay the signs of aging such as wrinkles and skin discoloration.

Watermelon Can Naturally Brighten Your Skin

If you’ve got dull skin or have an uneven skin tone, try snacking on a wedge of watermelon to improve your complexion. The fruit contains glutathione, which has skin brightening and lightening properties. Eating watermelon or using the fruit as an exfoliant is a natural way to get brighter skin. Though it may take some time before you can see results, using watermelon as a skin whitening or brightening agent is safer than using commercial skin lightening creams, which may cause side effects such as rashes, allergic reactions, having thinner skin and even hypertension.

Relieves Minor Skin Irritation

The hot summer months can bring on a host of skin problems ranging from oiliness, heat rash, and skin itching. Fortunately, you can soothe these minor skin conditions by applying a cool wedge of watermelon to the affected area. If you’d rather eat watermelon than rub it on your skin, don’t fret—watermelon-enriched skincare products can also alleviate these problems as they’re infused with the same moisturizing and soothing properties as the fruit.

Caring For Your Skin With Watermelon

The easiest way to incorporate watermelon into your skincare routine is to eat the fruit on a regular basis. A wedge of watermelon consumed at least three times a week can give you the vitamins and antioxidants needed to improve your complexion and give it a healthy glow over time.

Once you’re done eating the fruit, don’t throw away the rinds, you can use them to make a DIY watermelon rind mask or face mist. To make the mask, just slice the rind into paper-thin pieces and apply to your face. To make the face mist, simply chill the rind, grate it, then strain through a cheesecloth. Place the liquid in a spray bottle and mist onto your skin.

Eating watermelon is a natural and inexpensive way to give your skin a beautiful glow. However, it is important to be certain that you’re not allergic to the fruit for your health and safety. If you experience shortness of breath, facial or tongue swelling, or dizziness after eating the fruit, seek medical attention immediately.
